In
the Rhine, Mosel and Saar River Valleys of the 17th-Century
Germanic folk healers and mystic were being persecuted and burnt
as witches for using a system of learning that was already
existing during the time of Solomon, some of which going back to
our Pre-History, having been passed down within these families
both male to female, from generation to generation. Until the
late 1600s, a number of these families fled to the New World and
with the help of William Penn, they settled in Lancaster, York
and Berks Counties.
There they ran into the remains of the
Susquehannock Indian Culture. The native healers and the so-called German
"witches", thereby realizing that their medicine had much in common: the herbs,
symbols, colors and chants, the reverence for the Earth, animal spirits and
healing stones. In this short moment of time, Pow Wow was born. It only ever
existed in the small area of Pennsylvania. This provided the original root of
all New World witchcraft.
This gift has been passed down within our
family for generations, through my Great-Grandmother, a very well-known Pow-Wow
healer, moreover, through my aunt to me. She passed this gift onto me when I was
twelve. All my life, I have struggled with the visions and emotions that the
gift brings. In me the vision side is much the stronger. For 40 years, I have
been working to use these symbols, shapes, colors and imagery in my art to
inspire, heal, enlighten, protect, strengthen all of those, who are drawn to my
work. These elements of shape, color and line connect with the primal side of
our nature, carrying us back to the very beginnings in our ancient past,
bringing mystic visions of far horizons, rebirth and renewal.
